The Role
We are on the lookout for someone with proven leadership skills to lead, mentor and direct our established Animal Control Team. This role is permanent fulltime. While you will be based in Marton, you will be required to travel throughout the Rangitīkei and Manawatu Districts.
You will have a collaborative and inclusive style, along with your outstanding communication, influencing and relationship management skills to get the buy in and engagement of others to ensure that our animal control services are delivered effectively.
This is a dynamic role and we are keen to hear from suitable candidates who have, or can develop, what we are looking for.
You’ll be joining an established Animal Control Team, reporting through to the Group Manager Regulatory Services.
What you'll do
- Provide leadership, mentoring and direction to the Animal Control Team ensuring full delivery of all services and activities for both Rangitīkei and Manawatu District Councils
- Initiate policy changes or enhancements
- Ensure the Animal Control team are aware of and complying with relevant legislation and Council bylaws, policies and procedures
- Ensure dog and animal impound functions are carried out according to relevant legislation and Council policies
- Ensure the pounds are maintained so they meet all animal welfare requirements
- Keep up to date with new legislation and updates
- Decide on and take remedial or enforcement measures for non-complying matters, make recommendations for prosecution, and initiate enforcement action where required as per delegated authority for the position
- Make decisions on classification of dogs and ensuring documents for objection hearings are prepared for any objections to classifications
- Prepare documents for court proceedings and court attendance when required
- Prepare and monitor operational budgets
- Ensure that regular feedback is sought and provided in order to meet contractual obligations and key performance areas to Manawatu District Council
What we're looking for
- Appropriate Animal Control Qualification or 5 years+ animal handling experience
- Proven ability to lead, motivate and supervise a diverse team
- Sound problem solving skills
- Sound knowledge of the Dog Control Act 1996, the Impounding Act 1955 and related regulations and Council bylaws, policies and District Plan
- Ability to handle animals and straying stock
- Ability to work effectively and efficiently and to set and meet appropriate standards and deadlines
- A strong team player with proven ability to work well with and interact successfully with other people
- Ability and willingness to learn and adapt to new technology and software in a continuously changing environment
- Thorough understanding and advocacy for the principles of customer first
