There are no significant changes from what was outlined in the Long Term Plan 2024-34 last year, however, the proposed average rates increase has decreased from 9.9 percent to 9.1 percent due to efficiencies found.

In the consultation document called ‘Where’s Annual Plan & Co @ Rangitīkei?’, Rangitīkei District Mayor Andy Watson emphasised that central government changes at local government level continue to create challenges for Council.

“The sheer speed and volume of legislative and regulatory change is putting immense pressure on councils, councillors, and staff. I am mindful that in some areas it might look like we are not making much progress, or that progress has stalled. I assure you; this is not the case. We are currently in a period of considerable infrastructure development for Rangitīkei, with a number of high-value capital projects in progress. We will have to make some careful decisions about how these projects are prioritised and balanced alongside the Government’s ‘back to basics’ direction, and legislative change,” says Mayor Andy.

Recognising that rates rises are putting cost pressures on all households, Mayor Andy also said it was important for Council to continue to consider how to prioritise value for money for ratepayers.

“Making sure the services we provide are the most cost effective and affordable for Rangitīkei residents is top of mind for myself and Council,” adds Mayor Andy

As part of this consultation, Rangitīkei District Council are also seeking feedback from residents on its Draft Waste Management and Minimisation Plan, Draft Dangerous, Affected and Insanitary Buildings Policy, and Proposed Schedule of Fees & Charges. Combining these in with the Annual Plan means reducing the time and resources required, ensuring consultations are the most efficient for ratepayers.

The consultation period for ‘Where’s Annual Plan & Co @ Rangitīkei?’ is open from April 4 until 5:00pm Monday, 5 May 2025.
