Parks and Reserves Highlights December 2018 - Athol Sanson
Welcome to the last Parks update of the year and what a busy year it has been. The team as always have been very busy trying to keep on top of things during the build-up to Christmas and helping with many of the events we see at our parks this time of year. This month I thought I would highlight a few major projects that the parks team will be working on next year and comment on a few highlights from this year. Next year will be an exciting and challenging year in our Parks with some important projects to get underway.
Highlights form 2018
For me the most rewarding part of 2018 in our parks has been working with the various community groups, schools and other organisations throughout the region. In Marton we have seen the development of the Elim Church property at Broadway Marton, making for an amazing greenspace in the Marton CBD, our thanks must go to the Marton Rotary and Lions for getting together to make this happen.
Also, in Marton are groups that are involved in the skatepark development and the Memorial Hall playground upgrades, both significant projects for 2019.
Taihape has seen commencement of the Hautapu River Parks project and the Taihape town gardens redevelopment as well as a community planting day at Memorial Park. We have also worked with schools on several projects, Department of Conservation and various user groups, private land owners, RSA, Project Marton etc. If it wasn’t for our community many of the projects, we are working on would be difficult to achieve.
Worth mentioning also is the development in Queens Park Hunterville, the toilets, drinking fountains and bins have seen an increased use of this park for freedom camping. It’s great to see this little park being so well used and respected.
