Water quality sampling of the Potable Water Supply for Marton

January, 2019

The Marton water supply is subject to the New Zealand Drinking Water Standards, and all the water quality sampling and analysis are prescribed in this standard. The water samples prescribed by the standard and taken during the week of coloured water supply included the following:

  • All chlorine disinfection levels of the water supply is continuously measured and recorded at 1 min intervals at the plant on electronic equipment.
  • Additional to these electronic data recordings we also took manual samples on at least three separate days of the week.
  • The UV disinfection operations and run hours are also measured and recorded on electronic equipment at the plant.
  • The UV Transmissivity was measured manually on at least two days during the week.
  • Bacteriological samples were taken on at least two days of the week from three separate positions on the network.
  • Chlorine, turbidity and pH samples were taken at the same time as we took bacteriological samples from the network.
  • Samples for disinfection by-products are taken at least once per month.
  • Algae, manganese, pH, turbidity, and temperature samples of the raw water were taken on at least one day of the week

Additional to the prescribed Drinking Water Standards sampling described above, we also took the following additional samples:

  • Two additional bacteriological samples from the supply network
  • A large number of operational measurements of Chlorine levels, Turbidity and pH at the plant. These measurements were constantly checked for operational reasons, but had the added benefit of continuously monitoring the water quality produced at the plant.
  • Additional raw water samples.

Below is the water quality results that were analysed in the midst of Marton's water woes in mid January.
