Mangaweka Bridge Replacement

The Mangaweka bridge was built in 1899 on the boundary of Rangitikei and Manawatu. While the bridge needs to be replaced, we’re also mindful that the existing bridge is significant to many for its historical importance. Discussions are not only centring around the construction of the new bridge, but also the fate of the existing bridge – will it be removed or maintained for historical purposes?
Heritage NZ has advised that an application has been made for the existing bridge to have a heritage classification and that it will be considered for inclusion on the heritage list at a later date.
